Okay so barring the fact that I may not get Ozone, Iphone or android, what else is there?
How do the new LG phones (that are flip like the old 5300 do?
Are the menus more readable to us as blind people?
From what I've seen in the store, there are only four flip phones.
one is a samsunk which my mom has, I do not understand the speech on it and find the buttens a bit a pain in the ass to find anything on.
The other n I remember was this much biggger(built for construttion) phones, it was heavy, and seemed to be made well.
Can't remember the other to at the moment.
Anythoughts on those of us that simply aren't goin to go with IPhone or Android and are on the Verizon wireless network?
Thanks!
John
I currently have the lg nv3 and don't like it but some people do. It is a fold style phone. The numbers are on the frunt and you fold it open to text. It speaks some of the menus but I have not figured out how to put in my contacts or check call history with it. You can send and receive texts but you have to use the say a command feature on it. I don't like the phone myself.
I've looked at the LG NV's and that is not the type of phone I'm lookin for.
Mine's just a flip phone with numbers on it, there is'nt folding over.
That h is the type of phone I'm lookin for an and was talkin 'bout earlier on this thread.
The reason I am considering talks is that I figgure this way a... I can understand the speech, b, i can set things liike clock and alarm etc on my own, and it might be cool to have the abillity to play with ring tones.
However,
I'm loving my 5300 too, and wasn't sure if t a new LG model like that that flips open exist and if its any good, like reading menus.
John
I have not found anything. There does not seem to be much. I plan to get talks so I can do more also.
Basicly as I'm beginning to think, Flips are a dieing breed, and if you ain't for smart phones , then sooner or later you will be screwed.
Older phones on eBay will continue to work, as long as the phones themselves with accessories are available, and the networks continue to support the older bands that the phones work on.
So far, I dont see the support from service providers dieing out, and there seems to be plenty of older phones out there to choose from.
Besides, if you have your own phone, you do not have to be in a contract, which is also nice.

John, you're correct, flip phones are a dying breed, and everything is moving toward Smart Phones. If you don't like the Ozone, enV, Haven, or iPhone, I can't think of what else would be accessible with VZW. And I could be wrong, but I thought it was only the Ozone that worked with Talks on Verizon? They used to sell the Motorola Q that worked with MobileSpeak, but no idea if they do anymore. I love Verizon's customer service, which is why I stay with them, but in terms of accessibility, I had to hand it to AT&T that they are better at it.
I haven't used the Ozone, so just waiting back on suthernlady's report.
At least they support the bands that these older phones work on, thus far.
If you're just for talking, LG 5300 is great.
Another nice thing is that you dont have to pay the extra cost for the data plann or texting plann with an older phone.
Your $40 a month plann can become very expensive!
Now if you happen to be a single person and used Metro PCS or Crickit, or Trackphone Wireless, and its all inclusive, that's pretty good.
Then again, you do pay a lot more per phone, and the family plann isn't cheap at all.
Don't get the Ozone, whatever you do. It freezes frequently and randomly goes into flight mode or vibrate/silent. I had that phone for just over a year and wanted to throw it out the window more often than not. Talks works okay for texting and things like that, but the data plan they make you buy is a complete waste of money because email and the Internet seemed pretty inaccessible. I know you aren't necessarily looking for a phone with those capabilities, but why pay for something that you won't be able to use?
You do have a point in paying for something i wouldn't be able to use.
It just i'm thinkin being able to set alarms, listen to bookx or mp3's, having talks on Verizon.
What would be really really cool is if you could get a small braille display for one of these things, this way I wouldn't have to depend apon speech, and people wouldn't be abel to hear my text messages if i ever start sending them.
For that, you'd need a Refresh-A-Braille, and a phone that would support it. A couple of my friends hardly ever need the speech on their iPhones because they use the Refresh-A-Braille.
If you want to be able to set alarms, and listen to music and what not, I'd like to interest you in a new piece of technology, its called an MP3 player. They're cheap, easy to use, and you can get screen readers for them, or buy ones that already have them. On many, you can set alarms, and listen to music or books.
Well, I have the samsung sway, which reminds me of a question I was going to ask a little later in this post. Well, You can navigate the menus just fine, I've learned to text on it, even if it doesn't speak the letters I've typed, and it has speaking caller ID. So, is there a version of talks or mobile speak that runs on the samsung sway?
i have to ask what OS runs the sway? I will google it lader and see because you need windows Moble either "pocket" or windows "moble" to run moble speak or talks. Is it running simbian, talks and moblespeak run on that platform too.
